On Favoritism

I am so grateful I do not have to fly as much as I used to. When we flew to Minnesota for my niece’s wedding in August, I was able to check in on-line early and pay extra to get an advance boarding number.
Boarding an airplane today is considered one of the most stressful traveling experiences. No one wants to check baggage. We all want to carry our baggage with us (for good reasons after having our baggage lost too many times!).
But I don’t think there is anywhere else in the United States where ranking is more overt: first class, premier, world class, platinum, gold, silver and then come the numbers. When we were standing in line waiting for our number to be called, I thought to myself that I travel “plywood” class!
And when you finally walk through the first class cabin on your way to seat 26B, don’t you wonder who those people are who are drinking orange juice (or champagne) in those wide, roomy seats? Are they important, famous or rich?
The text for Sunday comes from James 2:1-4. It’s both a story and a warning about being impressed by others and treating each other differently. As you prepare for worship, examine the world you live in and reflect on who gets the best seats.
